US Storms Back on Sunday to Win the Presidents Cup for an 11th Straight Time

For three days at Medinah, the International team looked like it might finally end the drought. Then came Sunday. Trailing 10½–7½ going into the singles, the United States won nine of the 12 matches to beat the Internationals 17–13 and claim the Presidents Cup for an 11th consecutive time.

How the comeback happened

The US needed 8½ points from 12 singles to win outright, a tall order against a team that had led throughout the weekend at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago. Captain Brandt Snedeker’s players delivered:

  • Cameron Young set the tone with a 3&2 win over Ryo Hisatsune.
  • Jackson Koivun, a rookie, beat Si Woo Kim 2 up after a late surge.
  • Jacob Bridgeman clinched the Cup by beating Min Woo Lee 1 up when Lee bogeyed the 18th.
  • Xander Schauffele closed out the scoring by beating Ryan Fox 2&1.

The Internationals, captained by Geoff Ogilvy, won only two singles points through Tom Kim and Sungjae Im, while Nick Taylor halved with Russell Henley.

Stand-out players

  • Tom Kim (International): 4–1–0, the best record of the week.
  • Scottie Scheffler (US): 3–1–0.
  • Chris Gotterup (US): 3–1–0.
  • Cameron Young (US): 3–2–0.
  • Si Woo Kim (International): 3–2–0.

The International problem

The Internationals have now won the Presidents Cup only once, in 1998, and tied once, in 2003. This was one of their best chances in years: they led after every team session and had the US on the ropes. But the familiar pattern returned on Sunday, when the depth of the American team told in head-to-head play.

What’s next

The win gives Snedeker a victory in his first match as captain. For the Internationals, the questions about format and team selection will start again. Attention now turns to the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Ireland, where the US will try to win back the trophy from Europe.
